The Sudden Shore is a pallet knife painting of a barren hill face and crashing ocean capturing raw, untamed nature through thick, sculptural textures. The impasto technique creates sharp, chiselled ridges for the earth and explosive, three-dimensional peaks for the white water, conveying a dramatic sense of movement and elemental power.
The Hill Face is rendered with thick, angular strokes, so that the landscape feels rugged and devoid of vegetation. Earthy ochres, deep umbers, and stark greys are laid side-by-side, allowing the flat edge of the knife to scrape and blend the colours directly on the canvas to mimic exposed rock and ancient stone.
The sea is a flurry of dynamic energy. The straight, sharp edges of the palette knife carve out the smooth, translucent underbelly of a wave just before it breaks. Thick dabs of pure titanium white are loaded onto the tip of the knife to create explosive sea spray, foam, and chaotic, churning water.
Unlike smooth brushwork, the palette knife leaves crisp ridges (impasto). You can physically see the drag and slice marks in the paint, which gives the crashing waves a tangible weight and makes the rocky, barren cliffs feel rough to the touch.
