The Approaching Tempest has a focus of raw energy. The painting is dominated by heavy storm. Instead of clear clouds, there are thick layers of impasto paint, across a brick wall.
A massive, horizontal wedge of deep umber, burnt sienna, and gritty ochre anchors the centre to mimic the rugged, crumbling face of a cliff. It is an immovable wall standing against the swirling sky.
At the very bottom, a vibrant band of emerald, moss, and lime green provides a sharp contrast. The valley is soft and vulnerable.
The overall composition relies on high-contrast boundaries, where the jagged brown of the cliff meets the turbulent darks of the sky, creating a visual tension that feels like a held breath before the wind hits.
