The client loved Earth and Ether and wanted a similar painting. Shadows on Stone was named by the client and it is a beautiful title for this painting. It feels more mysterious and contemplative than Earth and Ether, while still belonging naturally beside it. The painting has that same strong contrast between a heavy, geological landscape and an atmospheric, almost luminous space.
I particularly like the title because the “stone” relates beautifully to the heavily textured horizontal strata across the middle, while “shadows” captures both the dark areas across the landscape and the sense of something passing over the water below.
It feels related to Earth and Ether almost like a companion work but with its own identity.
Shadows on Stone explores the quiet tension between earth, water and sky. Layers of rich ochre, rust and umber form a rugged escarpment, their fractured textures suggesting ancient stone shaped by weather, erosion and time.
Below, softer passages of moss green, muted gold and deep olive create the impression of still water or a shadowed valley, catching fragments of light beneath the darker landforms. Above, a pale, turbulent sky provides a striking counterpoint of expansive and atmospheric against the weight and density of the earth.
Built through expressive layers of texture and colour, the work moves between abstraction and landscape. Rather than depicting a particular place, Shadows on Stone evokes the feeling of standing before an ancient Australian landscape: weathered, enduring and quietly powerful.
