Knifed Ridge - Drawing Room Rocks is a vivid, textured landscape utilising the impasto technique to capture dramatic contrasts in nature and the grandeur of the Illawarra escarpment overlooking Berry. Thick, unblended applications of colour give the piece physical dimension, emphasizing rugged geography and vibrant atmospheres.
Dominating one side of the canvas, a towering cliff face is rendered with heavy, structural strokes of a palette knife. Earthy tones like burnt sienna, deep umber, and slate grey form the bedrock. The rigid, angled edges of the knife carve deep crevices and geometric facets into the stone, conveying a strong sense of weight, age, and raw geologic power.
Flowing downward and outward from the cliff's base is a sweeping, lush expanse. The valley is composed of a rich tapestry of greens—from deep forest and olive tones to bright, sunlit chartreuse. Instead of blending the colours smoothly, the palette knife lays them side-by-side. This creates a mosaic effect that mimics the rolling, textured appearance of meadows and distant treetops catching the wind.
In the far distance, where the valley floor meets the horizon, the sharp terrain softly recedes. A subtle, serene strip of blue peeks through, denoting the distant ocean.
