Fire Over the Berry Escarpment is an abstract interpretation of the familiar escarpment landscape around Berry on the NSW South Coast, transformed by the presence and aftermath of fire.

Layers of charcoal, black and ash-grey sweep across the work, creating a rugged, heavily textured ridgeline. Flecks and passages of burnt orange, ochre and rust emerge through the darkness, suggesting lingering heat and scorched earth. Above, the pale, hazy sky contrasts with the weight of the land below, while the cooler blue-grey tones at the base introduce a sense of distance, moisture and renewal.

Cracked surfaces, exposed marks and irregular layers are deliberately left visible, allowing the physical texture of the painting to echo the scars left upon the landscape. Rather than depicting a particular moment, the work explores the tension between destruction and regeneration and the way fire alters a landscape while becoming part of its continuing story.

For me, the Berry Escarpment is both a physical landmark and a powerful presence. In this work, I wanted to capture not simply what the escarpment looks like, but the sense of vulnerability, resilience and memory held within the land.
