A Gentle Winter’s Calm captures the quiet stillness of the landscape on a cool winter morning, when light settles softly across the hills and the familiar contours of the land seem momentarily at rest.

Rich layers of umber, ochre and earthy brown form the rising escarpment, their heavily worked surfaces suggesting exposed rock, weathered soil and the marks of time. Against this rugged terrain, the soft grey-white sky creates a sense of openness and cool winter light, while the unexpected wash of luminous green below brings a subtle feeling of life and renewal.

Texture is central to the work. Scraped, layered and fractured surfaces allow the landscape to emerge through suggestion rather than precise representation. Small areas of exposed pattern and mark-making become traces within the land, inviting the viewer to look more closely.

Although the escarpment has a strong physical presence, the painting is ultimately about stillness: that particular calm found in the Australian landscape during winter, when growth slows, colours change and the land seems quieter.
